Miss Evelyn Onyejuruwa (own-yeh-joo-roo-wa), commonly referred to as “Evelyn O.”, is a Nigerian native raised in South Florida. Since her reign as Miss Nigeria Florida 2011-2012, Evelyn O continues to encourage cultural awareness and actively make a transformative impact beyond her local community. Her passion includes uniting the African and American nations by exhibiting an unwavering devotion to sharing her heritage. It was through this platform that she established Ankara Miami, Inc., a subsidiary of Evelyn O., Inc., in August of 2011. As Founder/CEO of the South Florida-based event planning company, Evelyn O’s primary focus includes producing quality experiences as well as “Redefining African Cultural Trends” by promoting progressive people and trends within the African Diaspora.
February 2015 introduced the expansion of Ankara Miami, Inc.’s signature, red-carpet event from Ankara Fashion & Cultural Show to Ankara Miami: Florida’s FIRST African Fashion Week. Aside from featuring additional talent from Africa, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States, Ankara Miami, Inc. will continue to provide a medium that encourages buyer/investor relationships and facilitates networking opportunities for both established industry professionals and aspiring newcomers.
In addition to her commitment to Ankara Miami, Evelyn O has served as an active member in various local and national non-profit community organizations including the Miami & South Broward Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, The Urban League of Broward County Young Professionals Network, and the Owen Walker Jr. Foundation, Inc. – an organization focused on equipping, educating, and empowering our youth to become future leaders. She was the recipient of the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Federation of African Student Leaders, named as one of South Florida Business Journal’s “People on the Move”, awarded by Legacy Magazine as one of its 2013 40 Under 40 Black Leaders of Today & Tomorrow, and honored by Florida United for Nigeria and the Nigerian American Foundation for her contributions to the African Community at Large, Youth Empowerment, and Cultural Development. She was most recently awarded The Community Ambassador Award by the Miami-based Diaspora Arts Coalition for leadership, support, and impact on South Florida’s artistic, educational, and cultural landscape.
During Macy’s Celebrates Black History Month, Evelyn O has been a returning feature panelist, alongside style experts June Ambrose, Johnetta Boone, and Constance White. She has also been highlighted in publications such as Essence.com, Black Enterprise, SouthFlorida.com, and The Miami Times. Evelyn O is an entrepreneur, community leader, and game changer in the Miami fashion & cultural arts arena. Through Ankara Miami, Inc., she has heightened the awareness of the African culture in South Florida on a local, national, and international platform.
