What is Ankara? Ankara is an African wax fabric made of cotton that is characterized by rich, colorful patterns. When I was a child growing up in Oyotunji Village we wore Ankara as everyday casual wear and wouldn’t dare wear it to official functions. Well, all that has changed! Ankara is now worn by celebrities like Beyonce and singer Gwen Stefanie includes the fabric in many of her designs. Ankara is now used in high fashion and is seen all over the runway and red carpet.
Ankara Miami Inc. is the brain child of Miss Evelyn Onyejuruwa, Miss Nigeria Florida 2011-2012, a Nigerian native raised in South Florida.
